The aim of this 200 hour Certificate course is to equip you with advanced knowledge and skills to work effectively with people dealing with impact of trauma.
It will benefit counsellors, psychologists, mental health workers, psychotherapists, community workers, family therapists, social workers, advanced trainees and supervisors of therapists.

Neglect, Abuse & Trauma in Childhood and Adolescence: (Part One) Understanding their Effects in Adults
You will be assisted to understand the effects on adults of childhood and adolescent neglect, abuse and trauma, in relation to attachment theory. You will apply theory to case studies, know when to refer on, and what resources are available in the community. This course provides theoretical background - it does not teach skills. Participants need a basic understanding of normal child psychosocial developmental life stages.

Neglect, Abuse & Trauma: (Part Three) Helping Adults Heal
This workshop will deepen your understanding of the complexities of neglect, abuse and trauma. You will broaden your skill base working with adults using a variety of modalities including groupwork. Emphasis will be given to the therapeutic alliance, dissociation, counter-transference and transference dynamics, shame, guilt and developing healthy intimacy.

Dissociation and Post-Trauma Effects
This course will help you understand and identify the neuro-physiological effects of trauma including: dissociation, flashbacks and intrusive imagery, hyperarousal and the effects on memory. You will learn how to identify Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and how to work with flashbacks and dissociative states. You will also develop an understanding of the ways in which brain functioning is affected by trauma states. This course will prepare you for working with recent and historical trauma and will also look at the cultural context of New Zealand / Aotearoa in which these effects are identified and understood.

Shame: Removing the Cloak of Shame
Shame is triggered by exposure or a reduction in self esteem. It is an emotional response that impels us to hide. Working effectively with this crucial issue in counselling requires an understanding of the complexity of shame. This involves an awareness of physiological, emotional, cognitive and behavioural responses. Develop your skills in recognising shame in all its disguises, working with defences and the externalisation process in order to resolve shame.

Eating and Body Image Issues: An Introduction
This 12 hour workshop teaches an overview of the anti-diet approach to working with compulsive overeaters, bulimics and anorexics. Beith both symptom-focused and psychodynamic in orientation allows the counsellor to use the symptom as a metaphor for other psychological issues while still addressing the deep pain of eating and body image obsessions. The class will include case supervision and role plays, and is a prerequisite to additional training and supervision.

There will be videotaped demonstrations, and you will get to practice using your new skills in ego state and PsychoSomatic Integration as applied to eating issues. Focus will be on transference, countertransference and the therapeutic relationship.

Trauma: Its Effect on Clinicians and Caregivers, Keeping our Compassion and Passion Alive
If you work in a 'people helping profession' you are likely to be affected by trauma that has been experienced by your 'clients'. The impact of such trauma on clinicians and caregivers is known as 'compassion fatigue', 'burnout', 'vicarious traumatisation', or 'secondary traumatic stress'. This experiential workshop offers a three-stage psychosocial developmental model to assist you in acknowledging the impact of trauma, recognising early warning signs, and creating strategies to counter-balance this impact.

A Course in Love
Survivors of abuse have had their desire to love and be loved misused and often shattered. This course is designed to help you help your clients love and feel loved. You will develop your skills in working with your clients' self-hatred, fears of intimacy and difficulties of parenting with love. We will explore the theme of love and cultural expectations with particular reference to Aotearoa / New Zealand. You will learn theory on trauma and intimacy, and a range of skills including ow to use transference and countertransference.
