Our Mission

  • Our mission is to educate, equip and encourage people who work with people, so as to enhance the quality of life and relationships in our communities.

Our Values

We are grounded in the human sciences and established disciplines of counselling and psychotherapy. We work within the ethical codes of the disciplines in which we are trained and to whose standards we have gained accreditation. In essence we strive to promote health and strength in our clients and to do them no harm.  In our work as a training institute, we grapple with the implications of living in this land under the mandate of the Treaty of Waitangi, and we promote relationships of respect, justice and equity. We affirm the primacy of the bilateral relationship between Maori and Tauiwi in Aotearoa New Zealand and celebrate the multicultural nature of our society, recognising that our diversity requires openness and sensitivity of all people who work with people.

We hold a developmental and holistic understanding of human nature, encouraging each person to grow into self-responsibility and wholeness of being, in the context of healthy interdependent and respectful relationships.  Within this context we respect the full continuum of human sexual orientation, and its expression within mutually caring adult relationships.  We believe in the freedom of everyone to follow their own path of spiritual development. We respect and value the spiritual dimension in each person, in our relationships, in our communities, and in the environment.  Our training style is experiential, in which people learn by doing and by reflecting on their experience in the context of relevant theory. This is an integrative approach to learning, aiming to develop the whole person with a balance of head and heart, body and spirit.

Our Financial Principles

We are committed to providing a service that will prosper the community at large by providing innovative and excellent training for people who work with people. We are committed to providing such a service at a realistic cost.  The Directors and all associate tutors are paid only on a fee-for-service basis. While the Institute is not a registered ‘not-for-profit organisation’, we have never had a profit motive. However, while not seeking profit, we do manage carefully so that the possibility of financial loss is minimised. We have never sought sponsorship or government funding. This enables us to be independent and innovative educators. We are committed to both experiential-developmental learning and small class settings because we believe these elements enhance both personal and professional learning. We strive to achieve a balance between ensuring such education and providing it at an affordable cost.

Our Relationships

We offer training and education to the community in New Zealand, primarily in Auckland. We invite the best equipped tutors to lead each course in our name. We guide each trainee through individual and communal experience of self equipment, involving professional, ethical and personal development.  In 2010 we have scheduled a community-building weekend at the Orakei Marae with the aim of strengthening our commitment to bi-cultural partnership with Maori.  We anticipate a valuable, rich and satisfying experience.  It is a compulsory requirement for our students to attend marae twice during their training with HD&TI.  Our next marae is scheduled for 2012.   We have a strong relationship with the New Zealand Association of Counsellors (NZAC). Our Diplomas are approved by them and we are committed to their ethical code.

Our Services

We design and offer quality education in the fields of:

  • family therapy
  • counselling
