Group Leadership and Facilitation Training

PLEASE NOTE:  YOU MAY DO ONE, SOME OR ALL OF THE FOLLOWING COURSES

Are you wanting to develop yourself as a group therapist, group facilitator or team leader? This training is designed for you. The course descriptors below outline courses aimed at developing your ability to work with groups and teams. The training will assist you to work effectively as a group counsellor, Two, Three and Four of our training (and completion of the practice requirements listed below) will qualify you for our Certificate of Competencies in Group Leadership and Facilitation.

Certificate of Competencies in Group Leadership and Facilitation

To qualify for the Certificate of Competencies in Group Leadership and Facilitation you need to complete the following:

  • Parts One, Two, Three and Four of the HD&T Institute Group Leadership
    and Facilitation Training Programme
  • 10 Hours of supervision sessions (cost to be advised at time of supervision)
  • 50 hours experience working with groups
  • A two-hour practical demonstration of competence following
    completion of training hours (cost to be advised at time of assessment)

Group Counselling – Diploma Endorsement: The HD&T Institute Diploma in Counselling and Family Therapy and Diploma in Counselling can be endorsed with Group Counselling when, in addition to Group Dynamics at Stage Two of your counselling training, you complete Parts Three and Four of the Group Leadership and Facilitation Training.

PART ONE:  The Dynamics and Facilitation of Groups: Introductory Training

This course offers theoretical teaching and experiential learning in the dynamics and processes that occur in groups. You will learn how groups work, develop your ability to be effective in groups, and increase your awareness of group processes. You will develop as an effective member, skillful observer and assessor of group interactions. Expect to be an active and observant participant, open to experimenting, taking initatives, sharing experience and ready to give and receive feedback. This course is Part One of our four-part Certificate in Group Leadership and Facilitation.

PART TWO:  The Facilitation of Groups: Intermediate Training Facilitating Therapeutic Groups

In this course you will learn experientially about the principles and practice of facilitating and promoting growth in groups. Groups offer a rich opportunity for people to learn about themselves, how they relate with others, and to develop new ways of responding to the challenges and opportunities in their lives. This course offers an in-depth opportunity to learn about groups and yourself in groups. You will develop your ability to reflect in-depth on your experience and functioning in this training group and to use this to inform your understanding of groups, and your work in groups as a therapist, leader, facilitator or group member. The course will include some theoretical models of group functioning which will extend your understanding of groups and their workings. This course is Part Two of our four-part Certificate in Group Leadership and Facilitation.

PART THREE: The Facilitation of Groups: Advanced Training Developing Potency as Leader and Facilitator

This course will provide advanced training and coaching aimed at enhancing participants’ ability to create powerful and rewarding group experiences for others. You will develop your ability to facilitate potently, safely and creatively. You will develop confidence in facilitating productive interactions. You will be assisted to promote self-responsibility, selfdisclosure, and interdependence. The training will assist you to develop effective roles and relationship patterns, explore interpersonal styles, assess current and earlier experience in groups, and increase your flexibility and spontaneity. In particular you will develop your ability to work with conflict, emotion and intimacy in groups. This course is Part Three of our four-part Certificate in Group Leadership and Facilitation.

PART FOUR:  Facilitation and Leadership Training in Specific Areas

This training is focused on the application of group facilitation and leadership principles to specific purposes and contexts.

Facilitating Personal Development in Groups

This course is for you if you lead groups for personal learning, development, therapy or support. Participants will be coached to facilitate this group themselves and will receive feedback and training input as the group progresses. Facilitating and coaching will promote a healthy and interactive learning environment to maximise your potency, self-reliance and ability to contribute to interdependence. You will further develop your abilities to:

  • appreciate and facilitate the process of group formation and inclusion
  • promote and facilitate a culture in which open engagement is the norm.
  • assist group member spontaneity
  • explore a range of creative ways of working with groups

This course is Part Four of our four-part Certificate in Group Leadership and Facilitation.

OR

Facilitating Leadership and Learning in Teams and Organisations

For those interested in Organisational Leadership, tutor Rhyll Stafford offers specific supervisory training in this area. Use this supervisory learning group to explore leadership and learning in teams and organisations. You will work directly with the challenges you face as a team leader, manager, coordinator, project manager or trainer. We will work with a range of conceptual tools to explore your current dilemmas. These sessions will assist you to manage change effectively, integrate groupwork principles, diagnose restraints and needs for learning and work with resistance (at individual, team and organisational levels). The dates of these small group supervision sessions are organised at times suitable for participants and the tutor.
