Understanding Grief & Grief Counselling

This workshop will help you: understand that everyone grieves significant loss;  attend to your own significant losses; appreciate the effects of childhood loss; recognise grief reactions; recognise what helps and what hinders grieving; understand the tasks of grieving; appreciate the ‘continuing bonds’ a grieving person can have with a deceased person; and learn grief counselling principles and procedures that can assist grieving people.

If you wish to complete the Certificate in Applied Grief Studies, please note: The aim of this 120-hour Certificate is to equip you with advanced knowledge and skills to work effectively with grieving people. To this end, we have engaged tutors who are seasoned practitioners in particular areas of client grief.

To complete the Certificate Course you must:

  • attend Understanding Grief & Grief Counselling (or an equivalent
    12 hour training pre-requisite)
  • attend Foundation Evening (Friday evening 8 Feb, 6.30-8.30pm - 2 hours)
  • attend Consolidating the Learnings (Friday evenings 4 April & 29 August, 6.30-8.30pm – 2 hours each)
  • participate in any six 10-hour-weekend-workshops named below (other
    than Building a Good Foundation, Consolidating the Learnings and Pulling
    It All Together) (60 hours)
  • complete 30 hours self-directed learning including client work,
    consultation, supervision and reading
  • attend Pulling It All Together (Fri, 6.30-8.30pm, 7 Nov, Sat/Sun, 9.30-4.30pm, 8-9 Nov) (14 hours)
  • inform the HD&TI Office that you intend to do the Certificate course

Foundation Evening for Grief Studies Training

This workshop is for those intending to do the Certificate in Applied Grief Studies course. It will introduce course participants to the grief studies programme and the course of study that they are undertaking.

This workshop with consider the various ways that children and adolescents process loss and grieving.

Grieving and Spirituality

This workshop will consider the various cultural traditions of Maoritanga, Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Judaism and Islam to dying and death (there will be a speaker from each of these traditions).

Grief Resulting from the Loss of Animal Companions

This one day workshop will consider the various losses and grieving associated with the loss of animal companions, including the impact of loss through animal euthanasia.

Grief and Dying

This workshop will consider issues of loss and grief as death approaches; also rituals that assist dying persons, people who accompany dying persons and people who grieve following death.

Grief Resulting from Adoption

This workshop will consider the losses and grieving commonly experienced by birthparents, adopting parents and adopted persons. These losses are often complex and grieving can be both complicated and retrospective.   There will be speakers who are adopted, birthparents and adopting parents who will conribute to developing awareness of grief resulting from adoption.

This workshop will consider the losses and grief associated with the ending of relationships through separation and divorce; also the losses and grieving experienced by gay and lesbian people when relationships end.
